Release Notes:
Despite being a cliche of the laziest type, the idea of the
difficult second album is one that has endured simply
because so many bands seem to be unable to avoid falling
into its trap. Leeds Forward Russia! launched themselves
into so many peoples hearts two years ago with Give Me A
Wall, an album so tightly coiled that every one of its
enigmatic songs seemed to be bursting under the force of its
own tension. It was a collection of songs defined by the
whip-crack of drummer Katies snare and hi-hat, which meant
that while it was instantly recognisable as part of the
post-DFA dance/punk buzz it stood out enough for it to be a
still-stunning work that can justifiably be called of the
best debuts of the century so far.

And Life Processes is by no means a sequel it feels more
like the work of an entirely different band. Where Wall was
concise and focussed this sprawls and swirls, with a new
label (Cooking Vinyl) signifying their break with the past
in the form of no longer working as closely with Dance To
The Radio. Sod Joes Well, this is a record pitched at
Brixton Academy: every note drips with a laudable ambition
and vision that is lacking in so many bands around nowadays
who simply want to retread some half-arsed scene or exist in
a lineage that immediately bestows upon them some kind of
credibility. And while FR! arent wholly successful Life
Processes is flawed, but agreeably so at least theyre
trying ridiculously hard.

First, the bad news. We Are Grey Matter is symptomatic of
the album as a whole, anchored as it is by a horribly tacky
synth line and a mawkish Call response! lyric that is so
poorly executed its impossible not to question what they
were thinking. Despite the song soon progressing beyond the
aberrant opening into something recognisably FR! (riffs
that slice over one another in rigid straight lines, Toms
histrionic, earnest vocals, a real punchy energy), its not
until A Prospector Can Dream that the album starts to fall
into place. But even this is handicapped by the lyric Did
you ever study the Israelites? / They made a new life for
themselves with such a peculiar change is anyone really
going to be able to reply in the affirmative? Again, its
hugely impressive that theyre trying to hard to gain such
an epic scope in their music when, arguably, no one would
have expected them to move in such a direction, but they
fall short of unequivocal success. And Fosbury In
Discontent is a fine attempt at real emotional nakedness,
populated by just Tom and an airy piano that does battle
with the singer for domination of the upper register, but
has none of the raw power or rawness youd expect from such
a stripped-back song.

But while it undeniably takes a few listens before
everything clicks into place (first-time FR! listeners will
be able to approach the album quicker fewer expectations,
ysee), its the most outwardly inaccessible song that
proves the real gem of the album. Spanish Triangles has
already been unveiled all nine minutes of it but it
demonstrates a stunning calmness and fluidity. It builds
slowly, powerfully but effortlessly, growing organically
into itself. Its worth noting that Gravity & Heat, for
example, is almost three minutes shorter but feels much
longer Spanish Triangles is the real culmination of
their work post-Wall and stands as the impressive,
brilliant centrepiece. And Dont Reinvent What You Dont
Understand, one of the shortest songs on the album, managed
to move from one-two dance-punk to something undeniably
epic, helped no end by Whiskas chiming guitars that seem
air-lifted in direct from Explosions In The Skys Those Who
Tell The Truth era. And Some Buildings is a three-minute
lament stretched gloriously out for almost seven minutes,
again given the chance to breath and mutate on its own. It
doesnt cut right to the feet like their earlier material
but instead takes up residence in the gut, and by the third
time you hear it all doubts will be blown away.

So its a second album, and its certainly difficult. But
its also an album peppered by moments of brilliance and not
held back by its few brave failures and one that no one can
have reasonably expected the talented quartet to have come
up with. Its not the instant adrenal injection some were
hoping for, but it is certainly more than worth your time.

Release Notes:

At the beginning in 96/97, F and S. recorded loops and made sound Aerial M like Space Needles. E arrived and Acetate zero recorded the first 7 on Orgasm into 98. In 99, realization of Softcore paradise, the 1st album published with 200 specimens always on Orgasm, which will be re-pressed thereafter by the Californian label Drumkid (initially envisaged on Slumberland). The idea was to record pieces instinctively and simply, while making cross lines of guitars without neglecting the contribution of electronic elements. A certain melancholy post lo-fi air of nothing. After 3 individual, Acetate zero leaves their second album Ground Altitude in 2002 on Arbouse Recordings. At the end of 2004, left the 3rd album Crestfallen, always on Arbouse recordings. The group gained a permanent member and especially an additional guitar. This album ventilates and uncrosses its guitars by building walls deconstruits according to two angles of attack: MXR versus delay, feedbacker versus reverb. Certainly their most sonic disc. And always this good old woman nostalgia. Acetate Zero turned recently to France with Rothko. They also played with Pulseprogramming, Encre, Empress, the brothers Kadane (New Year, Bedhead...) and took part in festival MO FO 4, festival in Dijon...

Civilize the satanists

Well, the new album is there, just between 2007 and 2008, just nowhere. The title means nothing but Eduquons les sales cons (Educate the bastards) but if you can think about it, it just means we cant change nothing after all.

Twelve new tracks exept Definition of fall re-recorded 10 years after we made it and recorded in few instants almost 10 years ago. We love that song. We have new tracks now and always ready to play.

You can say that we dont mind, youre right but after 10 years how can you say that? You can say that we dont know how to use our guitars, youre deadly right but after 3 chords of wooden ride, were just laughing. Nobodys right and you cant change nothing after all.

NOTES

Along comes Olympia, comprising former members of Fairweather and Brand New Disaster. Disregarding most of the emo influences of their former bands and Washington D.C., except for maybe some silly song titles, these four gents created Emergencies, 11 songs and 42 minutes of almost straightforward, kickass rock. Sure, the title track might have more of an indie vocal style, but the heavy foot of a rock beat remains intact throughout. The combined experience of Olympia's members is evident in the songwriting, but moving away from the trends of today's music scene has helped them to create a refreshingly simple sound for this band.

The rock sound has garnered more than a few Foo Fighters comparisons, but the band isn't nearly as hard in its approach and compares better to some of the more radio-friendly alternative acts of the late 90s. If anything, the comparison applies more to early Foo Fighters, while the vocals of "Even Rome Had Sewers" bring Joey Cape to mind.

But whatever you want to compare it to, Olympia hits its mark with a great debut. Emergencies is diverse yet steady rock from start to finish. It's catchy, but not to a degree that'll make you feel guilty for liking it. Olympia is one of the first new bands worth checking out in 2007, and Emergencies is simply a great rock album.

Release Notes:
Who? Flowers Forever is the artistic outlet of Tilly and the Wall guitarist Derek Pressnall. The Omaha transplant began writing songs for what would become the bands self-titled debut in early 2007 during an emotional rollercoaster that found him waking with prophetic sensations. I basically had this really weird moment in my life where I thought maybe I was having premonitions, Pressnall recently told SPIN.com. I just felt really connected to the earth I guess. Slowly developing the new songs into a full-blown musical project, he enlisted the help of several friends -- including Tilly and the Wall collaborator Craig D. -- for the Flowers Forever LP, out Feb. 19 via Team Love.

Whats the Deal? Dark, gritty and often chaotic, Flowers Forever is a drastic departure from the carefree indie-pop of Pressnalls work with Tilly and crew, though it does share the latters tendency toward anthemic shout-along choruses. Its inspired by anything and everything I guess, Presnall said. From the ominous horn sections of the Billie Holiday classic Strange Fruit and the screeching organs of Black Rosary to the bouncy, soulful piano melodies of Elliptical Love, Flowers Forever is loaded in freewheeling, psychedelic stoner-rock with a decidedly retro vibe -- thanks in large part to Pressnalls bluesy, reverb dosed guitar leads and Lou Reed-ish vocals. More frantic tunes such as Golden Shackles and Wet Diamonds would also fit comfortably alongside the cathartic dissonance of fellow Omaha acts like Cursive or Desaparecidos.

Fun Fact: Before joining Tilly and the Wall, Pressnall monitored user pages for
Yahoo Personals.

Release Notes:

The times have finally caught up with acclaimed Denver quartet DeVotchKa. Not long ago when the band unloaded their instruments - a violin, a tuba and an accordion, among others - into a rock club, they were told they must be in the wrong place. They created music that was Grammy nominated (DeVotchKa created the soundtrack for the indie smash Oscar winning film Little Miss Sunshine) without the benefit of a huge promotion team or runaway budget, instead relying only on their own efforts by self-releasing their records. And they crafted gems of songs by mixing a beautiful blend of Eastern European bohemia, American prairie rock and distinctive indie and called it pop, rather than world, music. Now, the band is au courant, poised to shine on with their Anti- Records debut A Mad and Faithful Telling. From the cinematic richness of Transliterator to the modern pop experiment of The Clockwise Witness, to the soaring and wrenching Undone, DeVotchKa have produced a career-defining record and the world is listening.

NOTES :
Release Notes
Windsor Drive is a rock band from Houston, TX. The band was formed in December 2004 in a small town in central WI, with members, Kipp, Owen, Jon, Dustin, and Dan. Taking influence from artists such as; Coldplay, Death Cab, and Keane, Windsor Drive combines melodic guitars, soaring melodies, and the emotion a piano brings to create a delectable new sound coming from band members that are just under the legal drinking age.

They have worked hard to expose their music to a broad audience, receiving credits from respected industry leader's such as, Decoy Music, and Purevolume.com. The exposure continues with extensive touring and major radio play, including Houston's 94.5 The Buzz. In the efforts of booking tours and promotion, Windsor Drive has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with well known acts including; Eisley, Waking Ashland, Showbread, June, The Junior Varsity, The Receiving End of Sirens, Number One Fan, The Rocket Summer and many more.

While living in Houston, Windsor Drive has stayed busy playing and recording four new tracks with producer Robbie Seay (Sparrow Recording Artist, Robbie Seay Band), they recently recorded an additional four songs and plan on releasing the eight song ep, 'Meet the Tide' this summer. Although they're fan base in houston has grown rapidly and strong they will spend most of the summer touring the midwest and west coast. With a work ethic that equally matches their love for music Windsor Drive is on their way to a long successful career.

It's been just five years since Sons & Daughters released their short debut Love the Cup, an album that grabbed the discerning muso community by the shoulders shook them from head to toe, and dropped them like a hot deep-fried Mars bar Its superb 2005 successor The Repulsion Box provided more of the same rollicking rock 'n' roll with a sinister undercurrent - and subsequent support slots with the likes of Morrissey and Franz Ferdinand established the Glaswegian quartet as one of the most distinctive alt-rock bands the UK has seen in recent years. This Gift, their Bernard Butler-produced third outing, ploughs the same dark, menacing musical furrow and sees the double-edged sword of frontman and woman Scott Paterson and Adele Bethel in as robust and dynamic form as ever Sounding like a cross between Justine Frischmann and PJ Harvey, Bethel's deliciously sexy vocals intersect Paterson's jagged, urgent riffs to great effect on sultry offerings such as Gilt Complex, Flags and Iodine. Still although this is an album with a consistently urgent temperance - the frantic shoulder-shaking pace never really abates - the more 'straightforward' songs here (Split Lips, This Gift, Darling) are just as enjoyable, while rockabilly (The Bell, House in My Head), '60s garage (Rebel With A Ghost) and skirt-twirling '50s-style rock 'n' roll Chains) all get subtle nods, too. Sons & Daughters manage to make every embezzled genre their own, here, though - and This Gift is one that will keep on giving with every listen

Release Notes

If it had been released by a major label, Driving Easts debut EP would have every shot at MTV-level stardom on the level of Yellowcard or Fall Out Boy, says Stewart Mason of All Music Guide. Hailing from Fairfax, Virginia the members of Driving East bring an eclectic mix of influences and unyielding desire to their hard hitting style of punk pop.

Driving East is the newest signing to powerhouse indie label The Militia Group, which has launched the careers of bands such as Cartel, Copeland, and Acceptance. They bring with them a DIY play anywhere for anyone attitude and a work ethic to match. We will truthfully play anywhere and everywhere. Literally, one night we were opening for Midtown and the next we were playing in front of 15 kids at a Chuck E. Cheese in the middle of nowhere. But every show and every crowd means just as much as the last. Whether its 15 or 1500 kids we love to play together and hopefully that comes across to the crowd, drummer Jon Jester explains. Their hard work and attitude have started to pay off. In the year since their inception the boys have performed with national headliners such as Maroon 5, Sugarcult, Midtown, Fall Out Boy, The Early November, The Starting Line, Acceptance, Motion City Soundtrack, and many more earning fans and respect along the way.

After numerous line-up changes the band has grown into the unstoppable unit that steps on stage today. Jon Jester, the original drummer, moved to California to work with his friends in the South African band Just Jinger shortly after they signed with Capitol Records. The lure of playing drums and chasing his dream eventually brought him back to the east coast and back to Driving East. Along with him came Aaron Hubbard, with a masters degree in music and upright bass in hand (You dont see that in many punk bands, do you?). The union of Jester, Hubbard, guitarist/vocalist Nate Taylor, guitarist Justin Horenstein, and lead vocalist Barrett Mullins make up Driving East today.

The bands debut EP A Black Eye Or A Broken Heart was produced by Matt Squire (Panic At The Disco, The Receiving End Of Sirens, Junior Varsity) and garnered the band the east coast leg on last summers Warped Tour. Many people try to write songs to get them on the radio but with Driving East what youre hearing is what comes naturally to them, says Squire. Driving East is back in support of their forthcoming Militia Group debut, recorded at Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta with producers Zach Odom and Kenneth Mount (Cartels Chroma).
